A Fence of a Different Color

We were headed out for a photo op with our camera club on Saturday - I was driving for a change - but when I spotted this fence, I just had to circle back and pull over to get a better shot.  It certainly is an eye-catcher!

Even the sidewalks are color-coordinated!

And then, there's the gazebo!

Yes, that is a car lot!  I would have loved to pull in that lot and really look at this colorful place, but I was afraid they would think I wanted to buy a car...

Hummers!

After trying, in vain, to attract hummingbirds to our feeders this year, I figured I wouldn't get to see any except in other people's posts.  However, when I went to visit the Butterfly Garden the other day, I was delighted to see a few flitting around along with the butterflies.  The best part was getting to see them still in the tree!

 I am not sure, but I think this may be a female Ruby-Throat.  According to my "Birds of North America", that is the only one we have here on the east coast.

Monday's Mural

This Lake Placid, FL mural, honoring Richard Archbold and the Archbold Biological Station is 184' wide by 8' high and was completed in July of 2007.  The artist was Keith Goodson, who has painted several murals in the Lake Placid area.

In 1941, after leading 3 biological expeditions to New Guinea, Archbold founded the Archbold Biological Station at the Red Hill Estate. The Estate was donated by John A Roebling II.  The Station is now recognized internationally for its ecological research on the Florida scrub.  At the far right of this photo is Willie Chapel, who retired in 2008 after 50 years of service with Glades Electric.

This portion shows staff conducting a controlled burn.

The mural shows all aspects of the Station's mission: education through class visits;  land management through prescribed burning for plant community maintenance; and ecological research through studies of plants and animals.

These activities help guide the conservation of the globally imperiled Florida scrub and the rest of the natural areas in Florida's Heartland.  This last portion shows a family's rural home being connected to Glades Electric, Archbold's long-cherished aspiration for the community.

Weekend Reflections

A trip to the Botanical Gardens on Thursday provided some gorgeous reflections in the early morning - water was still as glass and the temperature was delightful!
