Tropical Bank Robbery

Today's mural from Lake Placid depicts the first bank robbery, in September, 1931.

Ten-year-old Grady Parrish was in the barbershop waiting for a haircut.  A lady, Mrs. Loftin, who was getting her hair cut, pointed out two men passing by the shop wearing wigs - one red, one black.  The young boy waited as long as he could before his curiosity got the best of him and he went outside to follow the men he thought were form the circus.  By this time, the men had entered the Tropical State Bank and were holding up the bank manager and tellers.

Grady ran to tell his father, O.C. Parrish, who told him to go get the Marshall, Tom Bozeman.  As Grady was running to Bozeman's home, he was yelling for the Marshall.  Tom ran out the door strapping on his weapon.  He stopped by the office, picked up a shotgun and proceeded to the bank, accompanied by Grady's father.  Bozeman was forced to shoot one of the robbers as they were tryig to make their getaway.  Bozeman was rewarded with $100 by the bank and young Grady received $10.00 for his part in foiling the crime.

The mural is 48' wide and 8' high and is painted on the spot where the Tropical State Bank was located.  The original building was destroyed in a 1991 fire.

As with most murals in the town of Lake Placid, this one has hidden objects - three "$" signs.  I have never managed to find all of the hidden items!  But, it does make for a fun day of looking closely at the murals!

The expression on young Grady's face is shows all the urgency and fear he must have felt.

A great mural and story to go along with it. Towns that promote murals are in the ball park from my point of view.

You did a great job capturing the intense emotion of this story in this mural. The style looks a lot like that developed by the Regional artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood. Wonderful capture. Thank you for participating in this week's Monday Mural.

I'm with everyone else... WOW! The mural and your narrative is like a short book. I can only see one $ on the front of the car.

That's quite the story, both on the wall and in your narrative!

I know this is an old post... not sure if you still read these, but I was wondering how you got the story on this... do they have the story posted up at the mural? I've heard slightly different story, so I was just wondering :) i have not been to see this mural in person yet. great job.
