Hunting Ducks

We went on a mini-vacation last week and took the youngest grandson to a campground about 75 miles away.  One of our outings was a trip to Beaverdam Park.  We went to both entrances - on either side of the lake - and saw no beavers or dams (try explaining that to a 4 year old!) at all.  We did, however, see a fair share of ducks.  I am not sure about the headdress on this first one!  I am not even sure what kind of duck it was!

It was traveling with this pair of ducks, which I think are female mallards - but I may be totally wrong about that!  My duck identification leaves much to be desired!

And then, there were the white ducks.  Again, until I was told differently, I was sure these were geese!  As I said...that identification thing...

And then, can you believe what she said???

Well I don't know what kind of ducks, ducks or geese, but they have some sweet faces and you got some great pictures. I like the duck with the floofy head feathers. What is this about Wordless Wednesday Again?... :) I need to check this out. I can't keep up with your blogs, but it's fun trying!

Too cute! I bet your grandson loved it (once he got over no beavers or dams!)
We have a few ducks here around our yard, but I'm not sure what kind they are. (They're the kind that follow me around....wanting a corn hand-out!)

It's a good question about where Beaverdam Park got it's name. Maybe there used to be a beaver dam there? Or maybe it's named after someone with the unfortunate name of Beaverdam?

The first ducks are also Mallards. Probably going through molt. And at a park like this, they may interbred with other species to give it an unusual look. The white birds are domesticated ducks, aka farm ducks. Geese have a different shaped head and it would be rare to see a white one (Snow Goose) in Virginia during the summer. Farm Ducks are usually escapees that then establish a breeding colony, usually in parks.

Glad all of you enjoyed your camping trip.

Ducks are such fun to shoot (with a camera) Linda, great collection you have here, I have a picture of Aimee wearing a very similar 'feather fascinator' as the first fashionista duck haha!

Ducks are always so much fun to watch. I don't think I've ever seen a duck with the head feathers like that. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Linda, that first duck is a peculiar looking fella isn't he? I think the white ones are geese also. But then, I may be wrong too. Also wanted to thank you for commenting on my guest post at the Thrifty Groove. I really appreciated it.
Hugs,
Jann

Great photos of all the ducks. I saw mallards when I photographed ducks this week also - just didn't take photos of them!

Have never seen a duck like that and I have seen a few! Might be a hybrid of some kind -- very weird!

Everything is so much more fun when seen through the eyes of a four year old.

Great captures and I also liked the first duck best. A new one for me as well.
