Monday's Mural

This mural was painted by a father and son team from Chemainus, B.C., which is the town that originally inspired the Lake Placid Mural project.  The train has an authentic sound of the oncoming engine as you walk past.  The mural is 38' wide by 10'4" high.  The artists have hidden 2 sets of eyes, and the word "Hello" in the mural.

The history of the railroad is depicted here on the left side.  Dr. Melville Dewey was an important figure in the early development of Lake Placid.  He was instrumental in getting the railroad brought here in 1926.  The South Central Florida Express freight trains regularly pass through town.  But, the depot is now a museum and is the home to the Lake Placid Historical Society.  In 1993, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Once again, amazing. I see no word 'hello' or the two sets of eyes [have you ever found the hidden items?]....but I see what looks like an airplane flying in perspective just under the ford's headlight. [sorry....it's early in the a.m., and I'm still groggy enough to TRY being funny].

Well, you know I love trains, so I think this is really a neat mural. It must be neat to walk by and hear the train sound!

I LOVE murals that depict times gone by and this one is GREAT! I confess that I can see neither pair of eyes nor the word hello. :))

What a great mural. I don't see the 2 sets of eyes or the "hello". But then you said they were hidden.

I really like old railway stations - they were often so full of character.

I love the mural Linda, but it's making me crazy trying to see the eyes and word haha! I bet if someone was to point them out it would clear as anything.

What a lovely job. I could probably spend hours looking for the eyes, and I agree with Perth, once you found them they would probably haunt you.

A train sound emits when you walk by - how cool is that! Might scare some folks. :)

I love that there are sound effects!

Historic murals are a favorite of many visitors to this meme. Trains have been so important to the making of this country no wonder they are featured in so many public murals. Even now a train whistle can still induce all kinds of of feelings. A father/son team makes this all the sweeter. Thanks for contributing to Monday Muralthis week.

Interesting mural. So many towns owe their beginnings to the railroad. We are lucky that we still get two passenger trains each day. one in each direction.
