Monday Murals

In 1925, Lake Placid, Florida only had electricity between the hours of 6pm and midnight.  Lee Crews opened Lake Placid Drug that year, and the next year he married Lillian Dean, a school teacher who was also known as a great cook.  She began serving her home cooking at the soda fountain.  In those days, Doc Crews compounded most of the prescriptions - making suppositories, powders, syrups and elixirs from raw chemicals.  He treated animals as well as humans and often was summoned out of bed  in the middle of the night.

This mural remembers the drug store that was burned some 50 years ago.  It had also served as an agency of two bus lines, the Florida Motor Lines and Greyhound.  It moved to its present location in the 1950s.  The drugstore closed in 2005, after spanning three generations.  It is on the front of the Rezultz Fitness and the Apothecary Smoothie Bar.  The mural is 12' wide by 7'8" high and was completed in 1994.

This is a great mural representing a bygone era. The prices in the store look great!

I miss those old drug stores. There is an old one in CH's hometown Fulton that still has a soda fountain and a lunch counter. Interesting story on the mural!

Kudos to whoever commissioned this mural and to the muralist. Nostalgic reminders of our past are a public service. You can see it in your comments. I think the new owners put the table and chairs there so folks wouldn't try to walk through the door. haha. Thanks for contributing to Monday Mural.

What a lovely mural with such a great story. So glad you shared it with us today.

I did not realize it was a painting until I took a second look.

Hi Linda, it's always sad to see a bit of history close up. I love the mural and girl, I wish I had that yellow table and chairs. So cute! I bought a pair of chilrens ice skates at a Salvation Army store in WI that say Lake Placid. I think they are so cute. Hange them from my vintage sleigh for Christmas.
Hugs,
Jann

...makes me reminisce of the old timey drug stores with soda fountains and the 'table top' juke boxes.

Linda...you two have been on my mind a lot today. Hope everything's okay with you two. Your dear man gets a pacemaker, Wednesday, right? I'll again be thinking of the both of you. I know it's stressful on the soulmate too.

I love murals. That reminds me that I have been collecting some. This one, and the story, is terrific. In my county, while it is terribly WASP, there are lots of people whose families have lived here since 1816.
Thanks for a great one!

You use the mural to give the history of the business. Awesome!

I loved this wonderful bit of history, as well as seeing the lovely mural. It's sad that the store burned. Like so many things we treasure from the past, it is now in our memories...but I'm happy that the mural keeps it "alive" so to speak!
