Church in the Wildwood

"There's a church in the valley by the wildwood
No lovelier place in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale"

Onward I go, searching for churches that remind me of my childhood church.  My church was not brown, nor were there any valleys or dales, but this song always made me think of home.  I am sad we don't sing it any more in church.

My maternal grandparents are buried in the cemetery across the street from Piney Ridge UMC near Pamplin, VA.

Another church near Pamplin, VA (didn't keep track of the name - shame on me!)

A simple, old church, at Cades Cove, TN.

And then, when we were traveling in Ireland, we came across this church, built by a man, for his family's worship, on his property.  I can't even get my mind around a church like this for private worship, but then, you would have to see the "house" he built as a wedding gift for his wife (Kylemore Abbey)!

Pretty impressive, wouldn't you say?
Have a blessed day!

Oh, I love that old hymn. I used to love to play it on the piano. It's sad that many of those old songs aren't sung any longer.
Love your church photos!

Love the church pics...I am drawn to the old churches I see and love to photograph them. This would be a great meme...why don't you start one! I think it would be very popular!!!

Lovely houses of worship. There is something special about buildings that are part of the local culture and community.

I had forgotten that song, but I remember always loving it!

Charming churches!

That is a different entrance/bell tower in the first one. I like to see cute churches and old majestic ones, too - but the unusual ones like that one are really interesting.

I haven't heard that hymn in a very long time. I can hear the melody in my head. :)

Great church photos...I too loved that song in church back in "the day". David and I saw so many beautiful churches in Ireland and actually everywhere in Europe - they had the advantage of being in existence so much longer than here in the USA but our churches have a charm all their own!!

I've started collecting church photos. Not enough to do anything yet. Love them!

"Church in the Wildwood" was also one of my favorite hymns! I've tried to find a recording on I-Tunes and can't find one :( Dianna - have you ever heard Bobby Jones' (he was from Surry & used to be married to Bunny Seward) gospel quartet, "Still Searching"? They sing some great old hymns. If you ever get a chance you should go see them.

The stained glass is just beautiful. You don't see too much of that anymore in the newer churches.
