Contrast the fences here in the US, with the fences I saw while in Ireland. I climbed over several of these types of rock fences to get to the top of a hill for the best view of the island we were visiting.
I think the climb was worth it...what do you say?

And I think I prefer the stone fences or walls to the wooden or or wire fencing that is so prominent here.
Definitely worth the climb! Rock fences are so much easier to traverse than, say, barbed wire!

I think the climb was worth it!! I look at those stone walls, and wonder how long people have been taking those stones out of the fields and piling them into the walls - there are a LOT of stones!!!
The climb was definitely worth it...love those rock fences and love that white, curving fence in the first shot.

The Ireland fences are charming and just wonderful and I can't even imagine how much time I would spend photographing those splendid scenes!
I think you're right--some fences are just decorative or mark property lines--or in this case provide a welcome. Ah, the patchwork field of Ireland! Hard not to find a view worth climbing a fence to see.
