I'd venture to say it has everything to do with keeping order. The good stay in while the those not so good... must line up outside the gate and interviewed first, before gaining entry.
Now this is interesting--as well as graceful! Do you suppose that the gate/fence was put up to prevent people driving into an obviously old cemetery? Relying on people's good manners to not drive over plots? :-)

Decorative purposes only, I would say.
Happy Friday!

Lea's Menagerie
That one certainly looks familiar! ;)
Have a good Friday and weekend - your Mom still visiting?
Looks like a good way to keep vehicles out, but it surely wouldn't stop other traffic!

A deterrent After all, the dead don't want just anybody driving onto their turf!
Look Hard to See the Fence!
Guess it's just for decoration. I like it!!!
At some point it probably had a purpose... And today it's purpose is 'Friday Fences' :-)
Have a great weekend.
Maybe St. Luke's little gateway to heaven since it's "framing" a cemetery.... :D
Pam and Sam
maybe it's the thought that counts. :)
Well it looks nice anyway and maybe keep the cars out.

Any chance there was a fence on both sides that now no longer exists? It's a very pretty gate, Linda. :)
Lovely gate and I like Pam and Sam's explanation!
I've seen other cemeteries with just a gate.Pretty fancy gate.
I have seen this done a lot around here. Seems cemeteries like to have a grand entrance for the processions that pass through it.
I wonder if at some point it was attached to a fence Linda, it does look a little quirky sitting out there all by itself!
